Autumn is arguably the best season for travel in Australia. The summer crowds have gone, the temperatures are comfortable, and the landscape — particularly in wine regions and forested areas — takes on beautiful golden tones. For retirees with the flexibility to travel midweek, it is the perfect time to explore.
You do not need to go far to have a wonderful day out. Here are some of the best day trip ideas across Australia, organised by state, that are particularly well-suited to retirees.
New South Wales
The Blue Mountains remain one of the most spectacular day trips from Sydney. The Three Sisters lookout at Echo Point in Katoomba is justifiably famous, but the real joy is in the quieter walks — the Prince Henry Cliff Walk offers stunning valley views with relatively easy terrain. The train from Central Station to Katoomba takes about two hours and costs around $8.50 each way with a senior Opal card.
The Hunter Valley is Australia’s oldest wine region and a wonderful autumn destination. Many wineries offer free or low-cost tastings, and the autumn colours in the vineyards are beautiful from April onwards. It is about two hours from Sydney by car.
Victoria
The Yarra Valley is Victoria’s answer to the Hunter — rolling hills, cool-climate wines, and excellent food. Healesville Sanctuary is also nearby if you enjoy wildlife. The autumn foliage in the Dandenong Ranges, just a short drive away, is among the best in Australia.
Daylesford and Hepburn Springs is a charming spa town about 90 minutes from Melbourne. The mineral springs, excellent cafes, and relaxed pace make it ideal for a leisurely day out. The Hepburn Bathhouse offers day spa access from around $30.
Queensland
The Sunshine Coast Hinterland — particularly the towns of Montville and Maleny — offers cool air, beautiful views over the coast, and a wonderful collection of galleries, craft shops, and cafes. Autumn is ideal as the humidity drops significantly.
Tamborine Mountain in the Gold Coast hinterland is another excellent option, with rainforest walks, a famous Gallery Walk lined with boutique shops, and stunning views on clear days.
South Australia
The Barossa Valley is world-famous for its Shiraz and is only an hour from Adelaide. Many cellar doors are relaxed and welcoming, with no pressure to buy. The autumn harvest season runs from February to April, making it a particularly special time to visit.
Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, is just 30 minutes from Adelaide and makes for a lovely half-day out. The main street is lined with German-style buildings, bakeries, and small museums.
Western Australia
The Swan Valley is Perth’s closest wine region — just 30 minutes from the city centre — and offers wineries, breweries, chocolate and nougat factories, and riverside picnic spots. A self-drive loop of the valley takes about half a day.
York, Western Australia’s oldest inland town, is about 100 kilometres east of Perth and makes for a lovely autumn drive. The heritage streetscape, antique shops, and the York Motor Museum are popular with visitors.
Tips for Getting the Most from a Day Trip
Travelling midweek almost always means fewer crowds, better parking, and more attentive service at restaurants and cafes. Many attractions also offer seniors discounts — it is always worth asking, even if it is not advertised.
If you are driving, check the Live Traffic app for your state before you leave. And if you are travelling by public transport, confirm your senior concession card is valid for the route — rules vary between states.
